The increased rate of strikes, bullying and burning of schools is due to high incidences of indiscipline among students. Misbehaving students are likely to perform poorly. Therefore, this work will describe various ways how to redirect misbehaving students.

How To Use Influence and Positive Tactics to Preserve Students’ Dignity

Influence and positive tactics significantly aid in changing the students’ intentions towards their attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors. By minding their attitude and standards, students will highly manage their dignity. Education instructors can use influence and positive tactics in the following ways to preserve students’ dignity. Handling students politely. Students should be welcomed warmly in the teacher’s office even if they are going to be disciplined. Secondly, the teacher should take the opportunity of helping the parents to teach meaningful life lessons to the children when disciplining students. Lastly, consistently communicating trust to the indiscipline students. By reassuring them that they are still valued even if they have broken the teachers’ or parents’ trust and encouraging them that they can still earn the trust over time.

How To Stop Misbehavior and Help Students Return Willingly to Appropriate Behavior

Several ways can be initiated to enable students stop misbehaving and behave accordingly such as clearly and firmly correcting the misbehavior of one student in the class. By doing this, it will positively influence nearby students with the same issue making them stop and behave appropriately. Also, effectively targeting the initiator of the misbehavior and intervening as early as possible in dealing with the misbehavior to hinder it from further spreading. Additionally, ruling out the school rules will help the students know what they are supposed to do; hence minimal chances of misbehaving. Lastly, make the students know that you care for them. The majority of defiant students always misbehave for no good reason (Drake, 2021). It is advisable to deal with them one-on-one rather than taking their rebellious behavior personally. Letting them know you are there for them will help in reducing the undesired behavior as they willingly behave appropriately.

How To Deal with Minor Misbehavior

Minor misbehavior such as talking in class and distracting others needs to be responded to rather than being ignored (Mensah, 2021). To stop such naughtiness, a teacher should always make an effort of walking around the class while teaching, especially near the naughty ones. It helps in silencing them. Also, the teacher should keenly point out those distracting others in the class and talk to them at the end of the lesson. Talking to them might make them cease the misbehavior. Furthermore, consistently using the question-answer techniques and ensuring every student participates. Calling out names or asking students to raise their hands before answering any question helps students to be more alert in class thus rarely engaging in meaningless talks and distracting other students. Lastly, while in class, the tutor should maintain eye contact with the students. It will make the students know that you are looking at them thus abstain from talking and engaging in disruptive behavior.

How To Deal with More Problematic Behavior

Problematic behaviors such as disrespect and apathy among children have been on the rise worldwide, not only within classrooms but in societies too. Such behaviors can be handled in ways such as; lessening anonymity especially in a classroom with a large number of learners. It can be achieved by using students’ names consistently in class, also creating time especially during breaks to engage with the learners one-on-one to know them better. Moreover, encouraging active participation in class and focusing on the needs of the learners will reduce the chances of students losing interest and misbehaving during the lesson. Additionally, the teacher should be the role model of the desired behavior to discourage the undesired behavior. For instance, showing respect to colleagues, the non-teaching staff and even respecting students’ ideas will motivate the students in following such footsteps thus discouraging the act of disrespect.

How To Deal with Students’ Refusal to Comply with Directions or Do Acceptable Work

Students refuse to do certain assigned work or instructions because of a variety of reasons such as social and emotional challenges or ignorance. Work or direction refusal can be dealt with in many ways such as; giving the student some time. Some students may not be willing to perform the given task at that exact time due to reasons such as tiredness. Therefore, it is advisable to give them some time to do the work. For instance, giving an assignment in the morning and collecting it in the afternoon. Another strategy is to keep on teaching while in class, even if the student has refused to do the given work. The teacher should keep on tutoring and involving the students through other means such as answering questions orally. Lastly, consider the learning challenges that make the learner refuse to do the work, for instance, lack of certain learning resources.

Conclusion

Discipline among students and teachers within the learning environment is essential for effective learning and teacher-learner relationships. Teachers should immediately identify cases of misbehavior among students and handle them appropriately. It is an effort of students, teachers, and parents to enhance good morals in students.
