Actual or Potential Health Concern

There are notable health concerns that the 67-year old man may suffer based on his weight and height. The man’s BMI is 18.88 which is within the normal body weight. Although the health assessment shows that everything is within normal, one major concern is that he could suffer from back or spine complications. The second possible health concern are falls since carrying the load every day is in itself a safety hazard.

Supporting Evidence

The man’s BMI is within range and hence possible chronic conditions should be ruled out. Besides, carrying the load is part of the light exercises that are key in reducing chronic conditions. Nevertheless, the elderly person may be straining his back as he delivers the package every day. The package is almost half his weight and the back may likely to strain resulting in chronic back pain. The second condition is the possibility of falls since standing for a long time and moving from one place to another when making the delivery can result in problems with the feet and nerves, which affect balance (Saleh, Thirukumaran, Mesfin & Molinari, 2017).

Why the Health Conditions are significant

Research shows that the elderly population is vulnerable to spinal complications. The loss in the mass of muscles has been shown to be the reason as to why most elderly people suffer from back pains (Aama 2011). Falls on the other hand is regarded as one of the main causes of morbidity and disability among the elderly patients. More than a third of people above 65 years are affected by Falls in the US every year. Care should therefore be taken to realize a downward trend.

Conclusions

Since both conditions can be prevented, it is critical that adequate measures are put in place to help the patient avoid the risk of falls and worse, spinal complications.
